Christian Formation through Participation

Chronos Groups serve as the small group ministry of Redeemer Presbyterian Church. We invite every person who worships with us to consider joining one of these groups.

Background Information: What is Chronos? The Christian Formation Committee, with the approval of Session, has structured Chronos around the concept of organizing our time properly as Christians. If we do not become conformed into Christ’s image, we will become conformed into something, or somone, else’s image—our idols. Therefore, it becomes imperative that Christians learn to organize their time in new and fresh ways.

Restructuring the Church Week: The church week of RPC will become restructured around two key events during each seven-day period. These two key events include worship on the Lord’s Day and a weekly—either Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday—Chronos gathering.

Lord’s Day: For Christians, the Lord’s Day should become the high point of their week. Everything builds towards this time when God speaks to His people through the ministry of the written Word and administers grace through the sacraments. Just as in traditional Jewish culture, where the mid-point of the work week builds toward the Sabbath and the days following until the mid-point of the following week reflect back on the Sabbath, so in faithful Christian culture, the mid-point of the week builds toward the Lord’s Day and the days following until the mid-point of the following week reflect back on the Lord’s Day.

Chronos Gathering: In order for Christians to reflect on the previous Lord’s Day and to prepare themselves for the coming Lord’s Day, they need fellowship and guidance from other believers in Christ. Therefore, weekly gatherings serve a singular purpose in helping believers to become formed in Christ’s image. These gatherings, conducted in people’s homes, should follow a short and simple Liturgy that includes these items:
  1. Opening Prayer

  2. Scripture Reading and Discussion based on the previous Sunday’s sermon.

  3. Prayer

  4. Evening snack—food helps bond people together.

Goal: The main goal with this new concept promotes participation in the life of the church. If Christians do not actively participate in the life of the church, they will tend to become shaped by competing factors. These competing factors may include such factors as the following:

  • A work-themed-week, where life revolves around work and the weekend becomes a time for “rest” from work.

  • A consumerism-themed-week, where each Friday night becomes a holy day—“I work in order to shop on the weekends or shop online.”

  • A sports-driven-week, where my favorite sport becomes the high point of the week, either in person or on television.

Rather, Christians should become conscious of these competing factors and stay in a frame of mind where the Christian calendar and the ebb and flow toward and away from the high point of the Lord’s Day, shapes their week. Participation becomes an absolute must in order for Christians to achieve this goal!
